About this website:

This is not the official Old Crow site. That site is here.

This website began after my 2001 summer vacation to Old Crow. I wanted to post a few photos and information about my trip. A large motivation was that most people did not understand why I went to the Arctic Circle, how I found Old Crow, and what I did there.

I wanted to not just explain myself, but to also share what I learned there. I wanted to tell others about the people, about the caribou, and the music.

Initially I had one page, until I decided to put the travel information on a separate 2nd page. Last summer, I decided that because it had been 2 years since my vacation had passed, and that what I wanted to share was more than just my vacation information, I broke the site into 5 pages: An introductory page, a page about travel, and 3 vacation pages. In this modest redesign, I tried to incorporate the colors of the Gwich'in flag into the pages. The website design was very simple, however and not very pretty.

The website was becoming a labor of love and I wanted to not only give it the beautiful layout that I felt it deserved, but I also wanted to be able to put it on my web design portfolio.

Therefore, during March of 2004, I made a mock-up for a new design which would be a container for the existing content I had already created. I divided the home page so as to create a separate caribou page and then spent a month putting it all together!

The website I have here is not in any way an attempt to detract or usurp the knowledge base that the official Old Crow site contains. I leave that to Paul, as it is and should be his right, as Old Crow's webmaster, to post all news, and official business. This site that I've created is pretty straightforward. I introduce you to my friends, the Gwich'in, I tell you about the caribou issue, I tell you about traveling to Old Crow and about my vacation. I've tried to convey my love for the Gwich'in and Old Crow and my interpretation of their essense.

I've explained my reasons for posting this site and the joy that it gives me in the making of it and the sharing of what I know. I hope that for you, you take away an understanding and an education about the Gwich'in and the Porcupine caribou. If you really want to get the know the Gwich'in, then you'll have to visit the Old Crow site. There, you will get lost in their culture and will feel like you know them after you finish.

About me:

I'm Andrea and I'm a web developer and violinist. You can read about how I came to find Old Crow in these web pages.

My qualifications are: I have been a web developer/designer since 1996 and have held professional positions in major companies. In addition to my day job as a web developer, I also make web pages and do updates in my spare time.

I have been a violinist since age 5 and have a Bachelor in Music degree in violin performance from Oklahoma City University. I was a member of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra for 10 years. I am founder and webmaster for fiddlechicks.com and in my research for that site, came across athabascan fiddling. I am still a student of this form of music, and have had the opportunity to fiddle in Old Crow.
