Mission: The Arctic Circle

Evidence of Cultural Caribou Usage:

 

I did not intentionally set out to take pictures of these uses. However, in putting these pages together, I thought to review my photos and find how many instances of caribou dependence I captured in my short visit to Old Crow. As you can see, caribou is not a sentimental cultural icon of their past -- rather, it is intricately woven into nearly every aspect of their present life.

Food:

caribou stew.  Yummy!
Food. This is a bowl of caribou stew.


A typical freezer, full of caribou. Many have larger freezers full.


Hooves. A traditional way to combat starvation in the winter. Drop it in some water and make soup.

Shelter:


Buckskin tent used for guest quarters at a fishing camp downstream.

Other traditional uses:


A traditional kitchen essential: racks for drying meat.


Smoker for drying meat. Caribou jerky keeps well in the winter and is a popular treat.
