I've been playing professionally for about two years, and playing and writing music incorporating improvisation for about 6. I had classical training on violin and viola for 18 years, and have been playing the instruments for 22 years. I have studied at the San Francisco Conservatory, the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, and include as my teachers Darol Anger and David Balakrishnan of the Turtle Island String Quartet, Susan Bates of the SF Ballet Orchestra(viola), Richard Field, principal of the Baltimore Symphony(viola), and Beth Gibson of the Berkely Symphony Orchestra (violin). In the last two years, I have performed with Darol Anger, Paul Hanson of the Flecktones, and members of Yonder Mountain String Band. I have also traveled to Hungary and Japan to play in a large rock festival (with MR. Con and the Bioneers) and at an orphanage (with the Suzuki comedy troupe), played in a punk bluegrass band (Brooklyn Browngrass) and a slowcore rock group (edison woods) in new york. I am also proud to have been the violist for the talented composers collective Anti-Social Chamber Music (New York) and a co-composer and electric violist for a mathy improvised performance piece called Area Code (with members of Shy Child, Touch Down, and the Seth Misterka Clones). that about covers it... I have discovered recently how much i love music and sharing it with people, and that might be a better bio than the preceding litany....
"I use a baggs pick-up on a johannes barton violin, and a fishman pickup on a 150-year old italian violin (maker unknown) with thomastik octavgeige strings on it. I hook both of these up to a raven labs master blender pre-amp and a mackie speaker. The set up gets a very natural tone without any of the 'hot' high frequencies usually associated with amplified violins."
