As a violinist, Kathy Sierra brings an artistic flexibility and energy, which makes her a joy to watch and hear. Kathy began her violin studies at age 5 in Honolulu, Hawaii and performed in concert with the Honolulu Symphony at age 7. Upon moving to Sacramento California, she continued her studies with Jeannette Bjorak and was Concertmistress of her middle school orchestra at the Sacramento Waldorf School. In high school, she studied with violinist Marlene Silva of Placerville, CA, and became the youngest member of El Dorado County’s Sierra Symphony. In 1990, she won the talent competition and a college scholarship from the Miss El Dorado County Scholarship Competition.
From 1991 to 1995, Kathy performed, acted, sang, and danced for her BA degree in Drama with an emphasis on music from Principia College in Elsah, Illinois. While there, she served as the Concertmistress and soloist for the College Music Ensemble, studying violin performance with Dr. Kent Perry of Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. Upon graduation, Kathy was presented with the College’s Francis Van Der Meid Smith Music Award for outstanding musicianship, and the Frank Parker Theatre Award for greatest overall contribution to drama in the college theatre.
Kathy’s musical style took an exciting and eye-opening turn upon moving to Berkeley, CA. There she met violinist, producer, and composer Kaila Flexer, who became a mentor to Kathy on other styles of violin playing, including Irish and Scottish fiddle, Bulgarian folk, Klezmer and Jazz. During this period, Kathy performed with the Gold Country Chamber Orchestra in Sacramento, CA, and the 1999 inaugural performance of the Cotati Philharmonic in Cotati, CA. She also played weekly in Berkeley fiddle jams and with an Eastern European folk group, headed by accordionist Nada Lewis.
In Spring 2001, Kathy quit her job in the corporate world to join the Celtic folk group, Golden Bough, formed in 1980 by Paul Espinoza and Margie Butler. Since then they have traveled to Canada, Switzerland, and extensively throughout the United States.
Kathy feels that this is her real calling in life: to bring music and the healing it contains to the individuals who would listen and be open to its message...to lift at least one person in the audience out of the daily "muck" of negative information they are constantly fed in life. Kathy lives in Berkeley, CA with her talented husband and videographer, John and their two fabulous cats, Fox and Dana.
Equipment: "My primary fiddle was made in 1992 by Bulgarian Violin Maker Hristo Tchechmedjiev. For that I use the Sennheiser omnidirectional lavalier mic and EW100 wireless unit. I place the mic underneath the tailpiece and aim it towards the middle of the bridge.
My second fiddle was made in Germany in 1911 and is used for louder gigs. I use a combination Crown GLM-100 mic/L.R.Baggs pickup into the L.R. Baggs Mixpro pre-amp. "
